How to choose the perfect photos for a watercolor portrait?

Sketch of 2 portraits - in black ink

A watercolor portrait is more than just a picture on paper. Here are some tips for selecting the perfect's picture - and who knows, this might even inspire you to commission a portrait of yourself, your family or your loved one!

1. Provide a clear photo

A good photograph is the basis of a successful portrait. Choose an image in which faces are clearly visible.
You can also pick several photos of the same person. Just to be sure.

  • Tip: Avoid photos taken in backlight or where faces are half-hidden.

2. Think about the outfits

Clothing can say a lot about who you are. Whether you choose a casual look, a festive outfit or something timeless, the clothing helps determine the mood of the portrait.

  • Choose something that suits your style: Do you like soft, harmonious colors or do you often wear bright prints?
Is there a necklace you wear often? Or a pair of socks?

  • In a family portrait: If there are several people in the portrait, the outfits don't necessarily have to match, once on paper it becomes a cohesive whole anyway. ;)

3. The background: simple or meaningful

The background of the photo can be an important element in the portrait. Do you want the focus to be entirely on the people? Then choose a photo with a simple, quiet background.

But perhaps a specific place has a lot of meaning to you - such as a beloved park, your living room or a street in your neighborhood. In that case, the background can add an extra story to the portrait.

4. Favorite objects

Sometimes an object can add an extra personal touch to a portrait. Perhaps you want to capture your favorite musical instrument, a beloved book or a family tradition. Details like these make the portrait unique and tell more about your story.

  • For example: A couple portrait with your favorite teacups in hand, a portrait of you with your best friends on that crazy vacation in Thailand or a family portrait with grandma, grandpa and the dog.
